THE SECOND BOOK OF THE NELSON TRIOLOGY

SAMPLE FROM THE BOOK

The Big Thicket region of east Texas is replete with poverty, especially among clusters of African-Americans, who struggle to eke out a threadbare existence. Dwight Lamar is born in public housing to a single mother, who barely scrapes by to feed her large family. As the young man matures he seems to be blessed with the unique ability to scheme, connive, and concoct ways to earn money. Honesty and ethics play little part in his early activities, which turn out to be the case throughout his life. He desperately wants to escape the shackles of his upbringing and goes off the New Orleans for college, where he excels in the classroom.

Never looking back, he ends up in Houston with prefect timing just as two large government entities (the City and County) are forming an unprecedented joint venture to develop a large diverse residential community. Lamar becomes head of the new entity. Always politically astute, he skillfully capitalizes on lax government regulations and oversight to establish his own fiefdom from which he diverts considerable funds for his own personal gain. His power becomes extensive and he does not hesitate to eliminate anyone who gets in his way. Pity the recalcitrant framing contractor who strays too close to his electric saw.

His undoing begins when he does business with Matt Nelson, an experienced local housing developer, who is trying very hard to rekindle his own business after his father had lost everything when he made a deal with a nefarious drug lord in Mexico. The entire Nelson family becomes involved including Matt’s naive young sister, Pam, who maneuvers to get close to Lamar despite the pleadings of her brother. Lamar has an affinity for beautiful women.

The tale is set mostly in southeast Texas, but ends up deep in the West Indies with surprising conclusion near the beaches and coconut palms. This book is a sequel to “The Pact with the Devil.” A third book of the Nelson Trilogy is in the works.

She frantically glanced around and spotted a closed door. His bathroom! It was her only chance. Screw the desk. Maybe he wouldn’t notice the difference. She bolted across the carpet just as he entered the outer office. She ripped open the door and threw herself in, just managing somehow to quietly close it as the man walked into the room. Safe for the moment Pam huddled and shivered in the dark of that tiny little space, struggling not to be completely overcome by fear. And then it got worse. Coffee! Coffee! She prayed he had gone light this morning and did not have to use the restroom before he went to lunch. If he pulled open the door, he’d find her immediately. She prayed this was not the one day he did not have a luncheon engagement. Had he already noticed the closed extender on his desk?

She just knew that her own pounding heart would give her away as she strained to hear him moving around the office. Then it was quiet for a moment. Had he left for lunch? Maybe she’d made it. Her hopes were quickly dashed when to her horror she saw the handle on the bathroom door start to turn. She closed her eyes, held her breath and thought surely she would burst. And then, …….
